Illinois Bans Texting While Driving

The Illinois Legislature has passed a new law that prohibits driving while writing, sending or reading electronic messages. This includes texting, emailing, instant messaging and accessing the internet. The law makes exceptions for drivers who are reporting emergencies, using a hands-free device, parked on a shoulder, or stopped with their vehicle in park or neutral.

This law becomes effective throughout Illinois on January 1, 2010.
